Good morning, y’all!
Because companies will really put “AI” in anything, South Korea recently unveiled an “AI-driven solar boat” that rides around and purifies lake water autonomously.
Sound complicated? We’re pretty sure it is.
Alright, now for the real news.
Water Treatment on Local TV
H2O Equipment Company scored some prime local TV coverage on Great Day Connecticut (WFSB Channel 3), and wrote about their experience in a recent blog post. The East Hampton operation turned their TV spot into a nice service promotion: they walked viewers through their comprehensive testing lab, explained their customized treatment solutions (including UV systems, softeners, and whole-house filtration), and positioned their well maintenance services as essential for year-round water quality. Their sales expert of 20+ years also hit key consumer pain points like water safety and hard water issues, while emphasizing their family-owned roots. A clip from the broadcast is included in the article.
Happy Birthday EPA
The EPA just turned 54 and its impact on the industry has been significant. This week, WaterWorld wrote about what the regulatory powerhouse has delivered since 1970:
Clean Water Act (1972) expanded its reach in 2023 with a landmark Supreme Court ruling, now protecting all waters with "continuous surface connection" to navigable waterways.
Safe Drinking Water Act (1974) established our industry's MCL standards, most recently flexing its muscle with April 2024's PFAS regulations.
NPDES permit system revolutionized pollution control by setting hard discharge limits - still driving treatment requirements for industrial clients today.
Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (1996) remains a key financing source for infrastructure upgrades, offering low-interest loans.
Clean Water State Revolving Fund (1987) keeps funding flowing for wastewater projects, creating opportunities in the municipal sector.
Bonus: The EPA's new Water Quality Indicators tool is mapping pollution hotspots, helping treaters spot emerging market opportunities.
Squid Bone Microplastic Filter
A study from Wuhan University just dropped in Science Advances, showing off a new water filter that's turning heads. The filter, made from a combo of cotton and squid bone (yes, you read that right), is proving to be a microplastic-removal powerhouse with a 98-99.9% effectiveness rate. This is a big deal because unlike current microplastic removal methods that rely on pricey magnets or complex coagulation systems, this "Ct-Cel" foam filter uses readily available natural materials and can be manufactured using standard freeze dryers or mechanical stirrers. While we're still a few years out from seeing industrial-scale models, this could be a cost-effective solution for microplastics.
RO Rentals Now Available
Wisconsin-based Complete Water Solutions, a provider of industrial and commercial water treatment services, is expanding into the RO rental game, rolling out systems from 6 to 20 GPM with some seriously flexible options. They're offering more to go with their rentals: same-day emergency service, short or long-term rentals, and comprehensive support including installation and startup. Their plan is to focus on temporary installations and emergency replacements, which could be a potential lifeline for system failures or upgrade periods. The company's also targeting the growing market for pilot studies and trials.
