Water Softeners in LA Laundromats

Hey folks, welcome back to Water Treats.

Correction from last week’s newsletter: we incorrectly referred to WQA CEO Pauli as he, not she. Our apologies!

This is a good time to remind y’all that you can reply to any of our emails, and thanks to Tony for the catch!

Let’s get into it.

Water Softeners in LA Laundromats

Praz Pure Water released this article describing how they’re making a big splash in LA's laundromat scene by tackling the city's tough hard water problems with their custom water softeners. They claim they don't just install and run; they really get to know each laundromat's water issues to create the perfect fix. This not only makes clothes cleaner and softer but also helps machines last longer and cuts down on soap and energy use. They say it's a win-win for both the environment and the laundromats' wallets, and it’s hard for us to disagree. Praz's focus on great customer service and building lasting relationships shows they're not just about business, but also about genuinely helping out.

When will the PFAS MCLs be finalized?

In a quick 5 minute video, Water World’s Jeremy Wolfe overviews the history of EPA's proposed PFAS regulation, when it will be finalized, and how it will affect the nation's water utilities. In it, he explains that the EPA is gearing up to set maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for six major PFAS substances in drinking water, although it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride in terms of timing. Originally, the proposed rule was expected in fall 2022, but it got pushed back to March 2023, and now the final rule is estimated to come out in early 2024.

The proposed MCL of four parts per trillion is super low– even lower than what many states already have in place. This means that utilities may need to upgrade their treatment systems to meet these new regulations, which could come with a hefty price tag.

Going Off-Grid

As doomsday preppers and rural land-owners know, sustainable off-grid water systems are a solid choice for getting water in remote places. Watson Well, a family-owned pump, well, and water treatment company based in Northern California, talks about “harnessing nature for water” in their recent article. They say that these off-grid systems use pumps that can be powered by renewable resources like sun, wind, or even by hand. The advantages of off-grid systems, the team says, are threefold: you get to be independent from the grid, running costs (after the initial setup) are low, and using renewable energy is great for the planet. They talk about how setting these systems up takes some planning– you've got to pick the right spot, get the right permits (notoriously difficult in Cali), and figure out the best pump for your water needs. Once you do that, it’s smooth sailing.

Alexapure Pro Water Filter: Is It as Good as They Say?

Water Filter Guru is back and reviewing another water filter; this time it’s the Alexapure Pro, a $270 stainless steel countertop gravity water filter. While we’ll give a quick overview of the results here, it’s absolutely worth checking out the full article and the video overview from Brian Campbell. In his review, Campbell says this filter gets rid of over 200 contaminants and is a breeze to set up. It's a good deal compared to other stainless steel models and works without needing power or plumbing. However, it's got a few downsides: the filter doesn't last very long, it can't get fluoride out of your water, and there's no official stamp of approval on its performance. In his tests, it did a great job cleaning up city and river water, but he did notice some stuff like fluoride and strontium actually went up after filtering.

Overall score from the Guru: 8.79 (9.08 Contaminant Reduction, 8.40 Design, 8.25 Maintenance, 8.00 Filtration Rate, 9.00 Setup, and 8.65 Company)

What else is happening:

  • LISTEN: WQA’s Technical Affairs Director reviews top contaminants from 2023 and gives his own 2024 predictions on the WQA Podcast (16 min.)

  • American Pump and Drilling, a family-owned business serving Olympia, WA (and owner of the sweetly named website olypump.com), releases an article describing what new homeowners should know about their water

  • EcoWater of Central California answers Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Fluoride? (hint: yes it does)

  • Meadow Lake Water Treatment, also based in the NW, claims this is why landlords and property managers call them for water treatment and testing

Stay warm out there! We’ll catch y’all next week.
