How Much Does a Water Softener System Cost?

We’re not sure why the Architectural Digest is diving deep into the nitty-gritty of water softener system costs. But it’s comprehensive and a treasure trove of tips and tricks, so we’ll take it!

We’re big fans of new technology here at the ‘Treats. So when we saw that a new startup is trying to listen to water, we had lock in and see what it was all about.

Conservation Labs is building a “water-listening sensor” that attaches to the plumbing of different properties, including residential and offices. Using an algorithm they trained on water acoustics, it takes the sounds it hears from the pipes and translates them into stats, leak alerts, and recommendations. Honestly, that’s pretty sweet.

But now for the real news!

How Much Does a Water Softener System Cost?

We’re not sure why the Architectural Digest is diving deep into the nitty-gritty of water softener system costs. But it’s comprehensive and a treasure trove of tips and tricks, so we’ll take it! Here’s a quick run-down of different water softener systems, their costs, and how they are described in the article (price ranges for the system only):

  • Magnetic Systems ($200 to $400): These use magnets to keep minerals out of water; cheaper but not as effective

  • Ion Exchange Systems ($500 to $2,000): These swap out minerals in water with sodium or potassium; a popular choice

  • Salt-Free Systems ($800 to $4,000): These treat water without adding extra salt; great for people watching their sodium intake

  • Dual-Tank Systems ($1,000 to $5,000): These can handle a lot of water; perfect for bigger homes

  • Water Distilling Systems ($1,200 to $4,000): These heat water to get rid of minerals; more complex and only make a small amount of soft water

  • Reverse Osmosis Systems ($1,500 to $1,800): These push water through a special filter; the priciest option

The team covers so much more in the article like how the size of homes matter, how to figure out daily use amounts, and considering water hardness (including a quick explanation on grains per gallon calculations).

Northern Irelander Reviews Waterdrop, Says “Meh”

The Waterdrop A1 Reverse Osmosis Hot/Cold Water Dispenser is a fancy gadget with a cool LCD screen and easy setup. But Kurtis Reid from Northern Ireland says that’s about it. In his fiery article he points out how they’ve capitalized on the trend where people are picky about how hot or cold their water is. He says it does a solid job of getting water just right, hot or cold. But, when you think about it, it's kind of pricey at £500 ($634), especially when your kettle (for all the tea drinkers out there) or fridge can do pretty much the same thing for way less. It's great at stripping out bad stuff like radium and calcium from your water, but that's probably more exciting for places with iffy tap water. It's quiet and fast at heating and cooling, which is a plus. However, it's big and takes up a lot of counter space, and the cost and specific uses might be a bit much for the average home. It might make more sense in an office. Reid gives it 2 stars out of 5.

Amway Updates Flagship Water Purifier

Everyone’s favorite MLM company, Amway, has rolled out a new version of their eSpring Water Purifier, the first time it’s been updated in over two decades. Now using advanced UV-C LED tech, the price tag falls right around $1300. In their announcement, Amway claims that the original eSpring has been a top choice for home water treatment for over 40 years and it even snagged a WQA Gold Seal back in 2018. They boast that the tech can last up to 10 years and that changing the filter is a breeze too – it takes 2 minutes, once a year, and no tools are required (just $250 for a new filter). Along with this, Amway's introducing their new Healthy Home App. This app lets users keep an eye on their eSpring and other Amway gadgets from anywhere, giving the lowdown on how much it’s been used, when to switch the filter, and easy access to the latest product info and how-to videos.

Anyone on a Public Water System Can Check Their Water Safety Test, Here's How

Every year, public water systems in the U.S., including those in Wisconsin where this article is from, have to test their water quality and share the results. Residents can check these results in the annual water quality report, also known as the "consumer confidence report," which should be sent with water bills by July 1st. The EPA has a handy tool on their website to find these reports for any place in the country, and they also have a guide to help folks understand what all the numbers and terms in the report mean.

Prediction: The increased customer awareness and opportunities to educate folks on their reports will bring with it more business opportunities as well. (Or nobody will use the report and there will be no noticeable spikes in traffic, what do we know.)

What else is happening:

  • Water infrastructure gets a boost as EPA announces $5.8B for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure

  • SpringWell releases article about understanding turbidity in drinking water

  • Kinetico Advanced Water Systems in Raleigh, North Carolina was recognized as the top Kinetico Dealer in North America (more importantly, the awards ceremony will take place in Jamaica)

Keep on keeping on, we’ll catch you next week.
