Here Come Millennials

Liz Freedman from Arthur Freedman Associates is back with an article discussing the big wave of millennials entering the workforce, especially in the water treatment industry where many are retiring.

Time to confess. Even though we hyped up World Water Day in last week’s newsletter, we didn’t actually think it was “celebrated” in the industry. Turns out we were wrong.

Advanced Water Solutions had a sale to celebrate water day and it was pretty big too!

Anyways, now for the real news.

Here Come Millennials

Liz Freedman from Arthur Freedman Associates is back discussing the wave of millennials entering the workforce, especially in the water treatment industry where many are retiring. By 2025, millennials will make up 75% of workers globally—just let that sink in! Luckily, Liz says they’re actually busting myths about their work ethic by working multiple jobs and >40 hours a week.

The piece shines a light on Eastern Technologies, Inc. (ETI), led by Gary Reggiani, who are training the next generation through mentoring and intense boot camps focused on water treatment basics. Reggiani emphasizes the importance of understanding and nurturing young talent, debunking stereotypes by pointing out their dedication and tech-savviness. The story of the Lilly brothers, Kegan and Gunnar, exemplifies this new generation's potential, detailing their journey from high school to becoming promising figures in water treatment, thanks to ETI's comprehensive training programs.

UV Sterilization 101

Sammy Farag from AMPAC USA just dropped some knowledge on UV sterilization, spotlighting it as an ace in the hole for nixing microorganisms without the chemical warfare. He explains how UV light at the 254 nm wavelength obliterates the DNA of germs in water, ensuring they can't replicate or cause harm. Farag really dives into how UV sterilization can do a lot, like making sure home water is safe, but also cleaning water in big factories and fish farms. He's all about the big advantages: no nasty chemicals needed, saving on power, and knocking out all kinds of germs.

Secrets of Tannic Acid

Ozone Pure Water is discussing tannic acid and we whipped up a Q&A with highlights from the article:

  • What is tannic acid? A compound that comes from the breakdown of organic matter, like insects, plants, and leaf decomposition. It's often found in water in areas with a lot of coastal vegetation or marshy ground.

  • Can you drink water with tannic acid in it? Yup! Small amounts of tannic acid in water are generally not harmful, but large amounts can cause stomach issues. It's mainly an issue of taste and aesthetics.

  • How can tannic acid be removed from water? Two effective methods are whole-house water softening systems with ion exchange and reverse osmosis systems. These tackle not just tannic acid but a range of other contaminants as well.

  • Are there any benefits to tannic acid? In controlled amounts, tannic acid can be used medicinally for skin issues and in various industrial processes, so really it's not all bad when managed properly.

Choosing a Dual Water Filter System

SpringWell recently released an article about the big decision folks have to make when picking a water treatment system: go for two separate units or choose a dual-system that does both filtering and softening in one. The team explains how a combo system, which combines filtering and softening into one unit, can save users money, hassle, and space. They point out that this "all-in-one" option is especially good for those looking to tackle both pollutants and hard water without the need for two separate systems. The article also highlights how dual systems are easier to install, require less space, and come with a single warranty, making them a handy choice for many.

Side note: There’s a picture of a family wearing “Best Family Ever” shirts in the article. It’s pretty funny.

What else is happening:

  • Zooming out a bit: the UN is recommending cautious adoption of water-intensive technologies like AI and emphasizing the need for sustainable management

  • US appeals court ruled that the EPA went too far in regulating PFAS under the toxic substances law, impacting a Texas company's longstanding plastic treatment process

  • How much do water softener systems in Oklahoma cost? Advanced Water Solutions says their whole home residential systems are $2500-$5500, which includes installation

  • Dierolf Plumbing and Water Treatment of Pennsylvania releases a robust guide on what you need to know for your annual well water check-up

Stay fresh out there, we’ll catch you next week.
